Sri Lanka- Georgia political relations
Sri Lanka accorded full recognition to the Republic of Georgia on 16 th July 1992 after the Independence from the former Soviet Union was declared on 9 April 1991 and finalized on 25 December 1991. Sri Lanka and Georgia established of diplomatic relations in June 1998. Ambassador in Sri Lanka based in Ankara concurrently accredited to Georgia and Ambassador in Georgia based in New Delhi is accredited to Sri Lanka.
Former President HE Maithripala Sirisena visited Georgia in July 2018 for a three day official visit to attend the 5th Session of the Open Government Partnership which was held in Tbilisi. During the visit former President held bilateral discussion with former President of Georgia, Giorgi Margvelashvili.
Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Hon. David Jalagnia visited Sri Lanka in September 2017 and held meetings at official level.
The First Session of Political consultations between Sri Lanka and Georgia was held from 3-4 August 2016 in Colombo. Second Session of the Political Consultations between the two countries is proposed to be held in Tbilisi.
199 Sri Lankan students are currently studying at the Tbilisi Medical University and 2 students are studying at Akaki Tsereteli State University and more to join shortly.
