“The History of Turkey-Sri Lanka Relations and the Way Forward”

The Embassy initiated a lecture series titled "The History of Turkey-Sri Lanka Relations” in Turkey by Dr. Mohamed Zameer Careem, Medical Historian and MPhil Candidate at the University of Colombo. The inaugural seminar, “The History of Turkey-Sri Lanka Relations and the Way Forward” organized in collaboration with the Marmara University in Turkey at the Marmara University auditorium on 22 December with the participation of academics, students, Honorary Consuls of Sri Lanka and journalists. 

Dr. Mohamed Zameer Careem through zoom platform made a detail presentation on the History of Turkey-Sri Lanka Relations, Shared Heritage and Centuries-long Diplomatic Relations. 

Attending through online, Ambassador M. Rizvi Hassen elaborated developments in the current friendly bilateral relations with Turkey with the examples of millstone achieved. The Ambassador stressed the opportunities in both countries as well. Ambassador also thanked Ambassador İskender Okyay, former Ambassador of Turkey to Sri Lanka and Foreign Affairs Commission Advisor of Turkish Grand National Assembly for his support to make the lecture series a success and helping the Mission to connect with Universities in Turkey.

Ambassador İskender Okyay, former Ambassador of Turkey to Sri Lanka and Foreign Affairs Commission Advisor of Turkish Grand National Assembly detailed his experience during his tenure in Sri Lanka, cultural similarities between two nations, Ambassador moved on to giving detailed information how to be an Ambassador in Turkey, process to be followed, and tips to work in Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey.

Finally, Mr Aydın Özü, Academician in MEF University and Energy Advisor gave information on his working experience in Sri Lanka, energy sector, how to be successful in today’s energy world.

 Ms. Yoshitha Jayasuriya, Minister Counselor (Commercial) and Ms. Betül Elif, Uğramaz, Public Relations Officer of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Ankara joined the event in person. The lecture series will continue in the New Year as well.
