Sri Lanka will commemorate World Seagrass Day on 1 March 2026 at the Kalpitiya Coastal Environmental Center under the theme:
“Seagrasses Enrich Ocean Biodiversity and Fisheries.”
Seagrass ecosystems play an important role in sustaining marine biodiversity, supporting fisheries, strengthening coastal livelihoods, and enhancing climate resilience. This year’s programme highlights the urgent need to protect and restore seagrass habitats to ensure food security and a sustainable future for coastal communities.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Environment of Sri Lanka, will bring together fisher communities, youth, school children, environmental officials, policymakers, and conservation stakeholders to raise awareness, promote community participation, and strengthen collaboration for marine ecosystem conservation.
Through awareness programmes, expert presentations, youth engagement activities, and community initiatives, Sri Lanka continues to reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding marine ecosystems and advancing global environmental goals.
Let us work together to protect our oceans and nurture a thriving marine future for generations to come.
